Musings | Snow Day(s)

8 Feb

Like most people in the continental US, I spent most of last week snowed-in, and while a snow day is one coveted by the majority of Texans, it’s just not in our genetic make-up to handle a snow week. For me, cabin fever set in on Snow Day numero dos, and I had to get out of my house. An icy drive-way and a desire for self-preservation meant that I wasn’t driving anywhere, but I did pull out my ski jacket and snow boots, went for a few walks, and snapped some great pictures. Beyond brief bouts around the block, I wasn’t exactly productive, but I did learn a few things as a result of Snow Storm 2011:

  • A Chinese restaurant will gladly deliver Sesame Chicken and Eggrolls on a day when the postman will not deliver the mail.
  • I can stop wondering what cats do when I’m at work. The answer is nothing.
  • Having experienced single-digit temperatures, I now realize that Sarah Palin is not the only thing wrong with Alaska.
  • Although my neighbor dresses professionally on an average day, if it is snowing, he finds it completely acceptable to emerge from his apartment wearing baby-blue, star-speckled pajama pants, a Santa hat, and flip-flops while clutching a spatula.
  • There is no limit to the number of pictures of snow people will post on facebook.
  • The only pictures that rival these “snow pics” on facebook are “Pictures of Dogs in Snow” and “Pictures of Small Children in Snow”.
  • Northerners who move to Texas develop very big heads when it comes to snow days and will take any chance given to interject with an arrogant air, “It’s sooo easy to drive on ice” and “I can’t believe Texans call this snow”.

I’m sure this list will continue. A snow fall is predicted for Wednesday, and because I live in Texas, this most likely means another day off of work. Unlike our neighbors to the north of us, Texans cannot drive on ice and jump at the chance for a snow day, even if it does mean calling a few flakes a “snow storm”.

Your photographs are amazing, I find it so hard to get good pictures when everything is white! I really like the one of the icicles :-)
